This stereo theremin ST-009 has two Volume Antennas close to each other, so that one controls the left channel volume, the other controls the right channel volume.

By moving the left hand from one to the other, the Theremin sound can be panned through a Stereo system or PA-Mixer.  Different sound effects can be attached to each channel.  As you pan, the sound effects change.  It can sound like 2 instruments in unison.

This picture shows the Left and Right Antenna locations at the extreme left of the Theremin.  The antennas are concealed inside the box near the left end.  Just place the left hand over one or the other, or in between the two.

A vertical PITCH-ANTENNA is located at the right end of the box.

It plugs into a socket there, so that it can be unplugged for easy transportation.

Move your right hand near to this to change the pitch.  The output range covers the Audio spectrum about 10 octaves from 10Hz upwards.

There is a 'Battery-LOW' Light which lights dimly in normal use, but flashes brightly for a moment when you switch 'off'.

If it flashes or lights brightly while the Theremin is switched 'on', you need to change the battery or use a 9-12v DC power-pack.

There are 2 sets of Variable Controls on the left side (both for 'Left' and 'Right' Channels.  The RANGE-CONTROLS determine the distance at which your hand affects the VOLUME.

The RESPONSE-CONTROLS determines the maximum volume of each channel.

The Variable Controls on the Right are for the TRIM-CONTROLS (FINE & COARSE) and the TUNE-CONTROL.  These determine the distance from the PITCH-ANTENNA at which your hand will affect the Pitch.  There are 2 Trim Controls: Fine> and Coarse.

The TUNE-CONTROL is used to tune the Pitch-Antenna if you are using more than 1 Theremin at the same time. (See Instruction #12)

The MUTE-SWITCH enables you to silence the Theremin for short periods of time.

The Theremin measures approx 600 x 100 x 50mm high, excluding the pitch-antenna. The pitch-antenna shown is about 600mm high.  The total weight is about 1Kg, so it is not heavy to carry.

The Theremin can be played either on a flat surface or mounted onto a microphone or cymbal stand.

It has a 'Soft-Start' Regulator and switches on 'gently' for a few seconds before working fully.  It's best to switch on a few minutes before playing to allow the Theremin to stabilise.

The Stereo Volume-Antennas give the musician great opportunities to express even more interesting sounds than are possible with a mono instrument.

1. The 009-Theremin can be run from a 9-Volt battery or from a mains 9-Volt Power-Pack.
2. To run from Battery:-
Use a 9-Volt radio battery or 8.4-Volt rechargeable battery.  Insert the battery into the battery holder at the rear of the Theremin, making sure that the battery polarity is the right way round.  If the Theremin is to be out of use for any long period, remove the battery, and use a fresh one later.  Always use leak-proof batteries.
3. To run the Theremin from a 9-volt regulated mains-adaptor:-
Make sure that the mains-adaptor is of the regulated kind, as unregulated ones often give poor sound quality.  If the mains adaptor has a 'spider connector' with 4 plugs on it, find the correct one to fit the small metal (3.5mm) socket on the back of the Theremin.  Otherwise, fit a 3.5mm plug onto the adaptor with positive (‘+’) connected to the inner terminal, and plug this in.  Make sure that the inner connection is positive (‘+’)

Before plugging or unplugging the power-pack to the Theremin, make sure that it is not connected to mains power.
4. Insert the pitch antenna into the socket at the top of the Theremin.
5. Connect the Theremin to your Sound System by two standard 1/4" (6mm) jack plugs, with a screened audio lead, one for each channel.  Adjust the Volume controls.
6. Turn each control up about a quarter turn from fully anti-clockwise, except for the 'fine trim' control, which has 10 turns.  Set this to '5'.
7. Switch the Theremin 'On'.
8. There are 2 Range controls, one for each channel.  By adjusting the Range control carefully, you should be able to hear a sound from the speakers or headphones.  When you hear this sound, adjust the Trim control to give a varying tone which responds to the hand waved near the Pitch-Antenna.
9. By bringing your left hand near the Volume antennas, the volume from each channel will change.
10. With your hand away from the Volume antennas, adjust the Range control for each channel so that, when it is turned clockwise, the sound ONLY JUST disappears.  Now, by bringing your hand near the Volume antennas, the sound should come louder (though it may become quiet again if you bring your hand very close).  You can also experiment with the Range controls and find a position where they reverse and become louder with your hand away from it and quiet with your hand near.  You may also find a position where, by tapping the Volume antennas gently with your fingers, you can play percussive sounds and bass-lines.
11. Adjust the Trim control so that, with your hand away from the Pitch antenna, a low pitch is produced which rises in pitch as you bring your right hand near to the pitch antenna.  Bring it to the lowest pitch possible, using the 1-turn ‘Coarse’ Trim control.  It can then be finely adjusted by means of the 10-turn ‘Fine’ Trim control.  This may need re-adjustment if there are temperature changes or if the battery is either very new or is running down.

Alkaline batteries appear to be the most stable, and rechargeable ones can also be good.  Temperature changes can be caused by draughts or by bright lights.
12. The Tune control is used to tune the Pitch antenna.  This is useful if you are using more than one Theremin, because you can use it to tune them apart so that they don't interfere with one another.  You can also use it to deliberately make them interfere with each other for strange sound-effects.
13. There are 2 Response controls, one left and one right.  Each can make the sound louder in its own channel if it is turned up.  If it is turned down, the sound will disappear.
14. The Mute control enables you to silence the Theremin for short periods of time without turning it off.  The Theremin should also be muted before switching it on or off to prevent switching sounds in the speakers.
15. Remove the battery when not in use.
16. Microphone Stand:
There is a microphone stand adaptor provided.  The microphone stand is fitted through the large hole under the 009 and fastened.
17. You can also connect the Theremin to various Sound Effects such as Echo, Reverberation, Fuzz, Distortion, Chorus, Ring Modulator, etc, for a range of exciting and unusual sounds.  Remember that different effects in each channel can enable you to create more exciting sounds.
