The 008-Theremin can be run from a 9-Volt battery or from a mains 9-Volt Power-Pack. |
| 2. |
To run from Battery:-
Use a 9-Volt radio battery or an 8.4-Volt rechargeable battery.
Insert the battery into the battery holder at the rear of the Theremin, making sure that the battery polarity is the correct way round. If the Theremin is to be out of use for any long period, remove the battery and use a fresh one later. Always use leak-proof batteries.
|
| 3. |
To run the Theremin from a 9-volt regulated mains-adaptor:-
Make sure that the mains-adaptor is of the regulated kind, as unregulated ones often give poor sound quality.
If the mains-adaptor has a 'spider connector' with 4 plugs on it, find the correct one to fit the small metal (3.5mm) socket on the back of the Theremin. Otherwise, fit a 3.5mm plug onto the adaptor with positive (+) connected to the inner terminal, and plug this in. Make sure that the inner connection is positive (+).
Before plugging or unplugging the power-pack to the Theremin, make sure that it is not connected to mains power. |
| 4. |
Insert the PITCH-ANTENNA into the socket at the TOP of the Theremin. |
| 5. |
Insert the Volume antenna into the 2 sockets on the LEFT of the Theremin, with the word TOP on the antenna facing UPWARDS. |
| 6. |
Connect the Theremin to your Sound System by two standard 1/4" (6mm) jack plugs, with a screened audio lead, one for each channel. Adjust the Volume control. |
| 7. |
Turn each control up about a quarter turn from fully anti-clockwise. |
| 8. |
Switch the Theremin 'on'. |
| 9. |
The control on the left is called the Range control. By adjusting it carefully, you should be able to hear a sound from the speakers or headphones. When you hear this sound, adjust the Trim control to give a varying tone which responds to the hand waved near the pitch antenna. |
| 10. |
By bringing your left hand near the Volume antenna, the volume will change. |
| 11. |
With your hand away from the Volume antenna, adjust the Range control so that, when it is turned clockwise, the sound ONLY JUST disappears. Now, by bringing your hand near the Volume antenna, the sound should come louder (though it may become quiet again if you bring your hand very close).
You can also experiment with the Range control and find a position where it reverses and becomes louder with your hand away from it and quiet with your hand near. You may also find a position where, by tapping the Volume antenna gently with your fingers, you can play percussive sounds and bass-lines. |
| 12. |
Adjust the Trim control so that, with your hand away from the Pitch antenna, a low pitch is produced which rises in pitch as you bring your right hand near to the Pitch antenna. This may need re-adjustment if there are temperature changes or if the battery is either very new or is running down. Alkaline batteries appear to be the most stable, and rechargeable ones can also be good. Temperature changes can be caused by draughts or by bright lights. |
| 13. |
The Tune control is used to tune the Pitch antenna. This is useful if you are using more than one Theremin, because you can use it to tune them apart so that they don't interfere with one another. You can also use it to deliberately make them interfere with each other for strange sound-effects. |
| 14. |
The Response control can make the sound louder if it is turned up. If it is turned down the sound will disappear. |
| 15. |
Remove the battery when not in use. |
| 16. |
Microphone Stand:
There is a microphone stand adaptor provided. The microphone stand is fitted through the large hole under the 008 and fastened. |
| 17. |
You can also connect the Theremin to various Sound Effects such as Echo, Reverberation, Fuzz, Distortion, Chorus, Ring Modulator, etc, for a range of exciting and unusual sounds.
Remember that different effects in each channel can enable you to create more exciting sounds. |
