STEREO THEREMIN 009

This model ST-009 has two volume antennas close to each other, so that one controls left channel volume, the other controls right channel volume. By moving the left hand from one to the other, the Theremin sound can be panned through a Stereo system or PA mixer.
DIFFERENT SOUND EFFECTS CAN BE ATTACHED TO EACH CHANNEL, SO THAT AS YOU PAN, THE SOUND EFFECTS CHANGE; IT CAN SOUND LIKE TWO INSTRUMENTS IN UNISON.

This picture shows the left and right antenna locations at the extreme left of the Theremin. The antennas are concealed inside the box near the left end. Just place the left hand over one or the other, or in between the two.

A pitch antenna is located at the right end of the box; it plugs into a socket there, so can be unplugged for easy transport. Move your right hand near to this to change the pitch. The output range covers the Audio spectrum about 10 octaves from 10Hz up. The Theremin measures approximately 600mm x 100mm x 50mm.high excluding pitch antenna. The pitch antenna shown is about 600mm. high. Weight is about 1Kg.
The Stereo volume antennas give the musician great opportunities to express even more interesting sounds than are possible with a mono instrument.

HOW TO USE STEREO THEREMIN 009

(1) Theremin 009 can be run from battery 9-Volts or from a mains 9-Volt Power Pack

(2) To run from Battery. Use a 9-Volt radio- Battery or 8.4-Volt rechargeable. Insert battery into the battery holder at the rear of the Theremin, making sure that the battery polarity is the right way round. If the Theremin is to be out of use for any long period, remove the battery, and use a fresh one later. Always use leakproof batteries. In this picture right and left channels appear wrong way round. This is because we are looking at the back of the Theremin.

(3) To run the theremin from a 9-volt regulated mains adaptor. Make sure that the mains adaptor is of the regulated kind, as unregulated ones often give poor sound quality. If the mains adaptor has a 'spider connector'with 4 plugs on it, find the right one to fit the small metal(3.5mm)socket on the back of the theremin. Otherwise fit a 3.5mm plug onto the adaptor with positive connected to the inner terminal, and plug this in. Make sure the inner connection is positive. Before plugging or unplugging the powerpack to the theremin, make sure it is not connected to mains power.

(4) Insert pitch antenna into the socket at the top of the Theremin.

(5) Connect the Theremin to your Sound System by two standard 1/4"(6mm) jack plugs, with a screened audio lead, one for each channel. Adjust the volume controls.

(6) Turn each control up about a quarter turn from fully anti-clockwise.

(7) Switch the Theremin 'on'

(8) By adjusting the range control carefully, you should be able to hear a sound from the speakers or headphones. When you hear this sound, adjust the trim control to give a varying tone which responds to the hand waved near the pitch antenna.

(9 )By bringing your left hand near the volume antennas, the volume from each channel will change.

(10) With your hand away from the volume antennas, adjust the range- control so that when it is turned clockwise the sound ONLY JUST disappears. Now by bringing your hand near the volume antennas the sound should come louder(though it may become quiet again if you bring your hand very close) You can also experiment with the range-control and find a position where it reverses and becomes louder with your hand away from it and quiet with your hand near. You may also find a position where, by tapping the volume antennas gently with your fingers you can play percussive sounds and bass- lines.

(11) Adjust the trim control so that with your hand away from the pitch antenna a low pitch is produced which rises in pitch as you bring your right hand near to the pitch antenna. This may need re-adjustment if there are temperature changes or if the battery is either very new or is running down. Alkaline Batteries appear to be the most stable, and rechargeable ones can also be good. Temperature changes can be caused by draughts or by bright lights.

(12) The 'tune control' is used to tune the pitch antenna. This is useful if you are using more than one theremin, because you can use it to tune them apart so they don't interfere with one another. You can also use it to deliberately make them interfere for strange sound - effects.

(13) There are two response controls, one left and one right, each can can make the sound louder in its own channel if it is turned up. If it is turned down the sound will disappear.

(14) The mute control enables you to silence the Theremin for short periods of time without turning it off. The Theremin should also be muted before switching it on or off to prevent switching sounds in the speakers.

(15) Remove the battery when not in use.

(16) For ideas on effects see the instructions for 002, but remember that different effects in each channel can enable you to create more exciting sounds.
