INSTRUCTIONS

NUMBER ONE
HOW TO USE PLANT CHANTS
(1) The PLANT CHANT connects harmlessly to most plants using very gentle clips on a connector lead. The clips may both be connected to different parts of the plant, or one may be connected to ground by clipping it onto a metal object such as a knife or large nail stuck in the soil. To connect to a plant, first wrap the two halves of the clip in 2 or 3 layers of tissue paper, soak this in fruit juice. now fix the clip gently and carefully onto the plant. If this is done with care, the clip can usually be left in place for a small number of hours. When both clips have been connected, plug the other end of the wire into the input socket of the PLANT CHANT.
(2) Connect a 9 or 12 volt power supply or battery to the power input socket of the PLANT CHANT. If a battery is used, this can be connected with the battery adaptor supplied, for type pp3 battery. If a power supply is used it should be a regulated one for best results. Switch on the power supply AFTER it has been plugged in to the PLANT CHANT. Switch it off BEFORE removing the plug from the PLANT CHANT. If a battery is used plug in the adaptor to the PLANT CHANT BEFORE connecting the battery. Remove battery from adaptor BEFORE unplugging the adaptor from the PLANT CHANT.
(3) Each PLANT CHANT contains its own mini speaker, which is very quiet, just designed to give a quiet background sound and enable you to know it is working, as the PLANT CHANT is intended for use with an amplifier if louder sound is required. The mini PLANT CHANT has no volume control, it is 'on' all the time, but very quiet. The other models have volume controls; turn them up a little so they will be heard. In the unlikely event the MINI PLANT CHANT is too loud, cover its speaker with a cloth to make it quieter.
(4) Connect the output socket of the PLANT CHANT to an amplifier or recorder if required.
(5) Turn the 'pitch' control about halfway up.
(6) Turn the 'speed' control about halfway up. The MINI PLANT CHANT has no speed control as it is preset.
(7) Turn the sensitivity control about halfway up. This control is designed to adapt the PLANT CHANT to different plants. When sounds are heard, adjust the 'sensitivity control' to get the best sounds from the plant. Usually this is not at maximum or minimum, but somewhere in between.
(8) After a delay of a few seconds, you should begin to hear sounds from the PLANT CHANT, and also from the amplifier speakers if an amplifier is connected. Adjust the controls to get the best sounds.
(9) Although most plants can be left connected for a few hours, attend to the plants regularly as delicate plants may need to have the pickups re-positioned from time to time to avoid damage. Put a little more diluted fruit juice onto the pickup clip tissue from time to time to keep it moist.
(10) If you use a stereo amplifier, you could connect a PLANT CHANT through each channel, or even more than one PLANT CHANT per channel. They will work with most types of input.

Some people play Guitar or other instrument along with the sounds from the PLANT CHANT, and there are some CD's of PLANT CHANT sounds in preparation which sound amazing! More news on these later.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
The plant chant picks up two signals from the Plants and converts these signal into sounds. The first signal is derived from changes in the electrical resistance of the plant, and is analogous to Galvanic Skin Response in humans. This is derived by placing a small measuring potential across the plant. The result is then averaged to zero, and changes in this are then registered by the equipment and passed to a highgain amplifier.
The output of the amplifier is then sampled at intervals by a sample-hold circuit which passes the samples on to a voltage-controlled oscillator and this results in a changing audio pitch which can be heard, and is often quite musical and a fascinating sound.
The plant also produces another kind of signal which is 'bio-electric potentials' and we mix these with the galvanic resistance-change signals to produce a composite signal which is what the sample-hold circuit picks up. It would be possible to separate the two signals to give two outputs, but the present models do not have this facility.
Although the Plant Chant is interesting in that it registers changes in the plant due to various stimuli in an obvious way due to changes in the sounds produced, some folks may prefer to use something like the Polygraph method pioneered by Cleve Bakster. He used a complex lie-detector type polygraph, and you can find plenty of reference to his experiments on the 'net and in various books. This type of polygraph is expensive, but a less expensive way to do it is to use polygraph-simulator software for PC; we have not tried this yet, but have been told that there are a number of suitable programmes available, and the results can be recorded on hard drive and printed out, with time markers on the printout.
The Plant Chant is just one way of registering the responses of Plants to Stimuli, and is very interesting due to the sounds produced, which can be very attractive and musical sounding. If you have further questions re the operation of the Plant Chant please do not hesitate to ask. More exciting details to follow about PLANT CHANT as the page is under construction.
